Sooners' Kip Lewis takes exception with the national disrespect

Oklahoma Sooners star linebacker Kip Lewis is the heartbeat of the defense. Lewis has started the last three seasons in the Crimson and Cream.

He's totaled 209 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and five sacks in his career. He's also known to make the key play the Sooners need to win the game. Despite being one of the most productive players in college football and the SEC, while also being the leader of one of the best defenses in college football, Lewis is often overlooked nationally.

Lewis was named preseason second-team All-SEC by the media. Top Tier also ranked him as the No. 15 best linebacker in college football. That kind of disrespect doesn't sit well with the Sooners leader. He made his feelings known after practice on Saturday.

“I don’t really get recognized nationally," Lewis said via Kailey Carnine on X. "I kind of made that my effort now, to let them know it’s kind of B-S. That I get overlooked. So, it's always going to have that chip on my shoulder in every technique I do.”

That chip could be valuable for Oklahoma. The Sooners are looking to build on last season's College Football Playoff appearance and return to the national championship conversation in 2026. For that to happen, they will need veteran leaders like Lewis to continue setting the tone on defense.

If Lewis continues producing at the level he has throughout his career, he may have plenty of opportunities to make sure the national spotlight finds him.
