South Carolina guard Cam Scott plans to enter NCAA transfer portal

According to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, South Carolina guard Cam Scott plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Scott just wrapped up his second season with the Gamecocks, but is not set to be on the move. A big loss for head coach Lamont Paris, who is looking to get back to winning ways.

“South Carolina sophomore Cam Scott is entering the transfer portal, per Kevin Bradbury of LIFT Sports,” Borzello said via X. “Former top-40 recruit redshirted this past season for the Gamecocks after playing in a reserve role as a freshman in 2024-25.”

Scott played high school basketball at Lexington (SC), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 40 overall recruit in the 2024 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

There is still thought to be some untapped potential for Scott. His recruiting ranking alone tells you that. However, the production as a true freshman did not meet expectations. Scott averaged 2.5 points while shooting 27.8% from the field and 17.8 behind the three-point line. You can add 1.3 rebounds and less than an assist per game to the statsheet.

Paris seemingly wanted to use the 2025-2026 season as one where Scott could develop behind the scenes. The decision to redshirt him came early on.

“I told him, I said, ‘You’ve got to take that team over,’” Paris said of the decision. “Like they’re going to be some days you’re going to be a guy that assists like crazy. Other days are going to be a guy that drives to the basket. Other days, you’re going to be a guy that’s just a catch-and-shoot guy. And so all those things help a guy develop his game. So I think it could be really good for him.”

Going back to his high school recruitment, Scott was once committed to Texas. However, there has since been a coaching change on the 40 Acres. Rodney Terry is no longer the program’s head coach. Sean Miller took over, meaning Scott may be completely wiping his slate clean. Following which schools have interest in him will be an interesting follow early in the portal cycle.
