South Carolina Scorches Kent State in Scalding Season-Opening Display of Might

The heat was brutal. The scoreboard was even more so. In temperatures that climbed above 100 degrees inside Williams-Brice Stadium, the South Carolina Gamecocks opened the 2026 season in spectacular fashion Saturday, overwhelming Kent State 57-0 before a sellout crowd of 77,559.
The Gamecocks turned the heat into a footnote by turning the game into a runaway. After punting on their opening possession, South Carolina scored touchdowns on their final nine possessions, turning what began as a hot afternoon into a celebration that sent much of the sellout crowd home early.
The Gamecock offense, playing its first game under new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, piled up 645 yards on 72 plays, produced 35 first downs and converted an impressive 7 of 8 third-down opportunities.
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers was nearly flawless before his day ended at halftime. Sellers completed 19 of 23 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns, leading South Carolina to a 29-0 halftime advantage. He returned for the opening possession of the second half and guided the Gamecocks to another touchdown before giving way to backup quarterback Cutter Woods.
With the temperature still soaring, Sellers spent the rest of the afternoon on the sideline.
Woods took advantage of his opportunity, completing 6 of 8 passes for 73 yards and a touchdown, while directing two more South Carolina touchdown drives.
By then, the outcome had long been decided.
Defense Dominates
While the offense was putting points on the board, the South Carolina defense delivered a performance just as impressive. The Gamecocks shut out Kent State and never allowed the Golden Flashes to cross midfield.
It was a complete defensive performance that allowed South Carolina’s offense to continually start with good field position and eventually turn the game into a rout.
The offensive production also came from throughout the roster. Eleven different Gamecocks caught at least one pass, while six different players carried the football at least once.
South Carolina’s depth was on full display as the Gamecocks continued to find the end zone regardless of who was carrying the ball or taking the snaps.
Heat Becomes Part of the Story
The weather became a factor as the afternoon wore on.
With the temperature inside Williams-Brice Stadium topping 100 degrees, many fans began heading for the exits during the second half despite the Gamecocks’ dominant performance.
South Carolina led 29-0 at halftime, and the combination of the lopsided score and extreme heat made staying until the final whistle a difficult proposition for many in the sellout crowd.
The fourth quarter was ultimately shortened to 10 minutes because of the overwhelming score and brutal conditions.
Still, the Gamecocks kept scoring.
By the time the afternoon finally came to an end, South Carolina had produced eight consecutive touchdown possessions following its opening punt, while the defense had completely erased Kent State from the game.
It was about as emphatic a start to the season as the Gamecocks could have hoped for.
South Carolina will return to Williams-Brice Stadium next Saturday night when the Gamecocks host Towson at 7 p.m.
After opening the season with 57 points, 645 yards and a shutout, the Gamecocks won’t have to wait long for their next chance to put the new-look offense and defense on display.
