Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks are 3-6 and on a four-game losing streak. It’s been a disappointing season, after entering Week 1 ranked No. 13 in the AP Top 25 Poll.
Going into Week 12 with a matchup against the Texas A&M Aggies, Oliver Hodgkinson of Pro Football & Sports Network lists Beamer as one head coach on the hot seat. The Gamecocks have already made one big coaching change, firing offensive coordinator Mike Shula on Nov. 2.
Even if South Carolina doesn’t want to get rid of Beamer, a change of scenery could be good. It’s set to be an eventful offseason, with teams such as Penn State, Virginia Tech, UCLA, Arkansas and Oklahoma State all needing a new head coach.
With so many openings, Max Chadwick of Pro Football Focus listed Beamer as a candidate for Virginia Tech.
The Hokies are looking to replace Brent Pry after he was fired on Sept. 14 following an 0-3 start to the 2025 season. Interestingly enough, one of those losses came to the Gamecocks in Week 1.
Despite this season’s shortcomings, Beamer has seen success with South Carolina. In five years, he’s gone 32-28 and had his best season in 2024, going 9-4. In his first season in 2021, the Gamecocks went 7-6 and won a bowl game after going just 2-8 the previous year.
What makes a potential match between Beamer and Virginia Tech even more interesting is that his father, Frank Beamer, spent 29 years as the Hokies’ head coach. Frank Beamer compiled a 238-121-2 record and went 11-12 in bowl games. He retired after the 2015 season as the winningest head coach in program history.
Shane Beamer didn’t just watch his father as a spectator, though, serving as the Hokies’ associate head coach and running backs coach from 2011-15. That means he already has extensive familiarity with the program.
Virginia Tech won’t be an easy turnaround for any coach that takes the job. Since 2020, the team has had one winning season and one bowl game win. The family connection, though, makes Beamer an interesting name to watch.
However, he is committed to South Carolina on a long-term basis. On Jan. 24, he signed a five-year extension, with the Gamecocks through the 2030 season.
