Southern Miss football elevated offensive coordinator Blake Anderson to interim coach after the departure of Charles Huff, athletic director Jeremy McClain announced on Dec. 7.

Huff was hired by Memphis to be the Tigers’ next coach, according to a report from the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

The Golden Eagles (7-5) were selected for the New Orleans Bowl and will play Western Kentucky (7-5) at the Caesars Superdome on Dec. 23 (4:30 p.m., ESPN).

McClain in his statement also said a search for Southern Miss’ next coach is already under way.

Anderson is in his first season with the Golden Eagles and has 10 seasons of head coaching experience. He was the Arkansas State coach from 2014-20 and the Utah State coach from 2021-23.

The Southern Miss offense ranks fifth in the Sun Belt Conference with 29.8 points per game. Its 266.8 passing yards per game is best in the conference with Braylon Braxton at quarterback.

Huff was Southern Miss’ coach for one season and was previously at Marshall where he won the Sun Belt.

Southern Miss AD statement on Charles Huff leaving for Memphis

Here’s McClain’s full statement from Dec. 7:

“Coach Huff has informed me that he has accepted a head coaching opportunity at another institution. Although his time here was short, we are very thankful for the intense work he and his staff went through to get our program back on the winning track. We wish he and his family much success moving forward.

“We met with the team today to discuss the transition, and I shared that Blake Anderson will serve as our interim head coach as we prepare for the New Orleans Bowl. This group of young men has come together in a remarkable way, produced a special season and is fully committed to finishing the right way. I encourage everyone to join me in celebrating them and supporting them throughout the bowl season.

“Our search for the next, right leader of Southern Miss football is already under way. This program is on the rise, momentum is strong, and we remain fully committed to building a championship future. Southern Miss football is in a great position moving forward, and we are excited about what lies ahead.”
