Staff predictions for Texas A&M vs. Arkansas in Week 5

Texas A&M's 2026 season is on the brink of total destruction heading into Week 5, as the Aggies will host Arkansas in primetime after consecutive losses to Kentucky and LSU, while last Saturday's 35-6 road loss to the Tigers in Baton Rouge was utterly embarrassing for a program that entered the year with realistic high hopes.

Nevertheless, the season rolls on, and defeating Arkansas requires much better play from starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who has struggled immensely in both losses, including 106 yards passing and zero touchdowns against LSU. Texas A&M's defense has also been problematic, failing to generate consistent pressure and allowing too many explosive passing plays in the secondary.

Still, Texas A&M's roster is too talented and experienced to keep playing at this level, especially Marcel Reed, who threw for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns last season. This will be up to third-year coach Mike Elko and first-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins to work together, as both their futures with the program, more so Holmon Wiggins, depend on the Aggies responding.

Before Texas A&M hosts Arkansas on Saturday night, here are the Aggies Wire staff's final predictions for the critical Week 5 matchup.

It's make-or-break time for Texas A&M, and some in the Aggie fan base have given up on the season, which is understandable given back-to-back losses to Kentucky and LSU. However, most national analysts would agree that this level of play, especially from starting quarterback Marcel Reed, has been confusing.

According to Mike Elko and sophomore linebacker Noah Mikhail, Texas A&M's communication issues on defense have been the focus this week, while the offensive line looked improved, especially in run blocking during both losses. If Marcel Reed is struggling, the focus should be running the ball, and the clear path to improvement is allowing fewer explosive plays in the passing game.

This week, Texas A&M's secondary has one job: stop former Texas A&M and Arkansas wide receiver Chris Marshall from wrecking the game, and, again, run the ball and set up play-action opportunities for Marcel Reed. Rain is possible in College Station, which could lead to a sloppy, low-scoring game. Still, I expect the Aggies to rebound before facing Missouri on the road in Week 6.

Prediction: Texas A&M 27, Arkansas 17

If there's any week for Texas A&M to right its wrongs and turn things around, it would be this week and this game.

Arkansas ranks at the bottom of the SEC in almost every offensive category, but the Aggies can’t let that deceive them. Star wide receiver Chris Marshall leads the conference in receiving yards through the first four weeks and has provided a much-needed spark to the Razorbacks offense. Texas A&M’s secondary, which has struggled to stop explosive plays, must be prepared for the weapons in the Arkansas wide receiving corps.

Arkansas’ pass defense hasn't been bad either. They rank No. 7 in passing yards allowed per game, an area where Texas A&M has struggled to find success offensively in the last two weeks.

There's no sugarcoating it any longer. Junior quarterback Marcel Reed must step up and give the Aggies consistency at the helm.

This is a game where Rueben Owens II, KJ Edwards and a returning Jamarion Morrow should have a massive impact. They will be the difference-makers on Saturday against the Hogs.

Prediction: Texas A&M 30, Arkansas 20

Texas A&M has given me very little reason to trust it after the losses to Kentucky and LSU. Marcel Reed has been inconsistent, the offense failed to score a touchdown in Baton Rouge, and the defense has allowed too many easy plays. I cannot look at the last two games and confidently say the Aggies are about to put everything together.

Arkansas should make this a tougher game than the early spread suggests. KJ Jackson is coming off a strong passing performance against Tulsa, and Chris Marshall gives him a receiver who can challenge an A&M secondary that has struggled in SEC play. If the Aggies leave him open the way they did LSU’s receivers, they could find themselves playing from behind again.

Still, I think A&M responds at Kyle Field. Reed does not need to carry the offense by himself, but he has to protect the ball and take the throws that are there. A better commitment to the running game would help him, and the defense should have enough talent to make a few stops when the game is on the line.

I’m picking the Aggies to get their first SEC win, though I expect them to have to earn it deep into the fourth quarter.

Prediction: Texas A&M 27, Arkansas 24
