It’s January 2, and you know what that means? Welcome to portal season.
As of midnight, the transfer portal is now wide open, and anybody in the world of college football is free to do what they please. Many Colorado Buffaloes have done just that, like Omarion Miller, Tawfiq Byard and DJ McKinney, all announcing their intention to finish their college careers outside of Boulder.
It’s time to add another name to that list, as standout freshman EDGE London Merritt announced that he’ll be hitting the portal as well.
Merritt was one of 15 prep recruits to come to Colorado ahead of the 2025 season, being one of many Buffs to come from IMG Academy in Florida. In his lone season at CU, Merritt saw ample opportunity and play time as a true freshman, playing in all 12 games and tallying 25 tackles, eight TFLs, six QB hurries and a sack. Merritt was listed on the PFF All-Freshman team and an honorable mention for Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year.
There were only a handful of players on Colorado’s 2025 roster that could have been labeled as “must keep” guys, and Merritt was undoubtedly one of them. After losing another promising edge rusher in Alex McPherson further back in December, this loss stings exponentially more. The Buffs have now lost two of their best young players on the defensive side of the ball and will somehow need to find a way to get that production elsewhere.
When more portal news breaks, and it will sooner rather than later, we’ll be here to update you here at Ralphie Report. Hopefully it’s good news next time…
