The Pittsburgh Steelers are not wasting any time in trimming a big chunk of their roster now that their preseason slate has ended. They cut 11 players on Friday, per ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Tight end Jaheim Bell, offensive lineman Greg Crippen, defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau, DB Jack Henderson, DB Brandon Hill, wide receiver Jakobie Keeney-James, DB Tamon Lynum, DB Daryl Porter, WR Cornell Powell, running back Alex Tecza and WR Isaiah Winstead are all on their way out.

Whether it is in bunches or spread across the next few days, it is always tough to see dreams end, or at least come to a temporarily halt. Pittsburgh is quickly getting to work on finalizing its 53-man roster following Thursday night’s 28-27 loss versus the Buffalo Bills. There will be more departures to come.

Mike McCarthy is walking the tight rope in his first season as Steelers head coach, as he tries to keep the team’s longstanding defensive intensity, while also using his extensive experience running offenses to reshape the identity of the franchise. The latest round of exits are just an unfortunate part of that process.

Fans are wondering what the state of the quarterback room will be once the dust settles. Considering that neither Aaron Rodgers nor Mason Rudolph are the long-term face of Steelers football, Pittsburgh has plenty to gain by getting a season-long look at rookie Drew Allar and second-year signal-caller Will Howard. Four is a crowd at this position, however.

McCarthy has less than two days to lock everything down.
