The 14-game SEC football losing streak for Arkansas is over. Mercifully, finally, the Hogs have won an SEC game. The Saturday night road trip to Nashville to face the lowly Vanderbilt Commodores was Arkansas' best chance for an SEC win this year. The Razorbacks cashed in the opportunity. Their 31-21 victory over Vandy marks UA's first SEC football win since October 26, 2024, at Mississippi State.
An SEC win is enough of a reward without any context attached, but the context is certainly encouraging for Arkansas, if only for one night. Is Vanderbilt a good team? No, of course not, but Arkansas did look like the better team in this game. Vanderbilt didn't hand Arkansas the win. The Razorbacks snatched this game from the Commodores. They took charge in the second half after an up-and-down first half.
Let's start with the offense and more specifically the passing game. Arkansas' offense scored 24 points, which isn't amazing but is certainly worlds better than the impotent no-show-level performances against Utah, Georgia, and Texas A&M. If the Tennessee game gave us one good quarter of Arkansas offense, this felt more like two and a half or three quarters of productive offense. The Arkansas attack felt potent and threatening and not something which could easily be squished and squashed. KJ Jackson played a solid game. He was not outclassed by Jared Curtis. He was the better quarterback because he made fewer big mistakes than his counterpart on the other side of the field. Jackson was able to spread the ball around to 12 different receivers. Arkansas found options other than Chris Marshall, who got injured in the first half of this game. Arkansas was not only distributing the ball to other receivers; it was hitting downfield shots. Multiple passes went for over 30 yards, and they led to points. This was definitely a step forward for the offense. It was "only" Vanderbilt, but this is generally what a Ryan Silverfield offense is supposed to look like. It's progress. That's all one can ask for a program in the middle of a rebuild.
The defense continued to do what it has been doing: It made plays. It came up with multiple takeaways last week. It did so again this week, only better, by snagging a pick-six and lifting the team in the first half when the offense had a slow start. Arkansas, up only seven midway through the fourth quarter with Vanderbilt driving, was able to pick off Jared Curtis again and reaffirm the point that KJ Jackson was the more ball-secure QB in this game, a welcome case of role reversal for the Razorbacks.
Arkansas did flip the script in this game, and now we don't need to wonder when – or if – the Hogs will win an SEC game. Box checked. Now we can all move on with a little more relief.
