‘Super Bowl’: Pete Golding’s telling reaction to Ole Miss beating Lane Kiffin’s LSU

Trinidad Chambliss faked a handoff and ran 14 yards to the left pylon with 6:14 to play at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday night. Ole Miss went for two, drew LSU offside twice at the goal line, and JT Lindsey took a direct snap in from a half-yard out. Jaylon Braxton intercepted Sam Leavitt’s tipped fourth-down pass in the end zone a few minutes later to close out a 32-24 win.

The eighth-ranked Rebels beat the seventh-ranked Tigers in Lane Kiffin’s first game back in Oxford since he left for LSU in November, two days after Ole Miss finished a program-record 11-win regular season and shortly before its College Football Playoff run. Ole Miss moved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the SEC.

Chambliss finished 33 of 48 for 363 yards with two touchdown passes and an interception, plus the rushing score. Ole Miss led 24-7 at halftime before LSU scored 17 unanswered points to tie it.

Pete Golding took the postgame podium with the Magnolia Bowl trophy back in Oxford for the third time in his four years on staff.

“It wasn’t the Super Bowl, and we didn’t make it to be the Super Bowl,” the Ole Miss head coach said. “I think the goals and the expectations that Glenn Boyce and Keith (Carter) have set for this place aren’t about winning one football game in September. And so am I super proud of them? Absolutely. But that’s three years since we’ve been here that we’ve come home with that trophy. That’s the expectation here, as it should be.”

 

Why Golding pushed past the celebration in his postgame remarks

Golding took over in November when Kiffin left for LSU, and he coached Ole Miss through the College Football Playoff to a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia. Several of Kiffin’s assistants stayed through that run before joining him in Baton Rouge, including offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr.

Saturday’s crowd had waited most of a year for the chance to tell Kiffin what it thought, and the band played “Neck” at the visitors as the students stayed off the field. Golding used his time at the podium to place a September win against a rival where he wants it, which for a program that reached the playoff semifinal last season is somewhere well below the top of the list.

“I don’t think anybody came here to beat LSU,” Golding said later in the same session. “Is it sweet? Absolutely, and we’ll enjoy it tonight for sure. But we’ve got to come back and work hard. We’ve got a really, really good Florida team next week.”
