Surprising Candidate Predicted to Become Next Head Coach at Arkansas

The 2025 college football season has one week remaining, and then all eyes will be on the postseason and the coaching carousel. One of the jobs available is with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

The Razorbacks’ season has been challenging, with a 2-9 record. Following a 2-3 start, they decided to fire head coach Sam Pittman. Bobby Petrino was named interim head coach and appeared to be a strong candidate for the permanent position. However, under his leadership, the team has now lost six consecutive games.

Now the question is, who will be the coach that ultimately takes over? Athlon Sports’ Steve Lassan has made a prediction, suggesting that Arkansas will hire Alabama Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.

“Wommack is a former Arkansas player (2005-06) and has previous head-coaching experience from a three-year stint at South Alabama (22-16 from 2021-23),” Lassan wrote. “The Missouri native joined Kalen DeBoer’s staff in ’24 and has guided the Crimson Tide to a spot among the SEC’s top defenses. With ties to the program, along with several years of experience in the SEC footprint, Wommack would be an excellent fit in Fayetteville.”

Wommack has done an excellent job as the defensive coordinator this season for the Crimson Tide. Alabama ranks No. 9 in total defense, No. 4 in passing yards allowed and No. 32 in rushing yards allowed. He has played a key role in Alabama being ranked No. 10 and positioned to make the College Football Playoff. Prior to his time as defensive coordinator, he served as head coach at South Alabama for three seasons, posting a 22-16 record. This included a successful 10-3 season in 2022. He also played two seasons at Arkansas before transferring to Southern Miss.

With the search accelerating and the market tightening, Arkansas appears poised to move quickly, and Wommack’s résumé, familiarity, and defensive pedigree could position him squarely in the Razorbacks’ plans. Now the question becomes whether Arkansas can secure its preferred choice before other programs join the race.
