Notre Dame has landed its first position player commitment in the 2028 class with safety Andre Jones committing to the Fighting Irish. Jones committed to the Fighting Irish just moments after his older brother – Julius Jones Jr. – also committed to Notre Dame.
Jones earned a starting role in the Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas secondary as a sophomore. He was joined in the starting lineup by 2027 safety Zayden Gamble, who is also committed to Notre Dame. That gives the Irish three commitments from the Raiders, who finished the 2025 season as the consensus No. 1 ranked team in the country after going 14-1 and winning a state championship. St. Thomas Aquinas beat Lakeland in the state championship, dominating the game 29-0 with the defense once again performing at a high level. Lakeland's quarterback went just 11-24 for 91 yards and two picks in the state title game, which showed off the dominant Aquinas secondary.
The 5-11, 175-pound safety finished his sophomore season with 37 tackles, four pass break ups and an interception. Jones plays all over the field for Aquinas. He'll lineup at safety and also come down in the slot, either as part of a single high safety look or as the nickel. Even as a sophomore you can see Jones has the same kind of high football IQ that his brother showed on offense. He's a smooth athlete, makes good reads and closes very well on the football. Teams will try to go at him with wheel routes and double moves, but Jones stays patient and disciplined, which allows him to play at a high level.
Despite being just a sophomore, Jones shows impressive physicality on the back end of the defense. He's a sound tackler, but when he gets a chance he'll come down and deliver punishment on ball carriers and pass catchers. Jones also shows good strength and technique when working off blocks. Expect to see him become even more impactful on the ball over the next two seasons, especially once Gamble heads off to Notre Dame in 2027. Playing beside Gamble and being part of the dominant Aquinas program will only help Jones become even more impactful as he gains more and more experience.
Jones is ranked as a four-star recruit by both Rivals/On3 and ranks as the nation's No. 271 overall player. He is also ranked No. 285 overall by ESPN. Jones earned a 4.0-star grade on the Irish Breakdown board. The talented defensive back earned early offers from the Irish, Florida State, Texas A&M, Penn State, UCLA, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Oregon State and Purdue.
Landing Jones gives the Irish two commitments in the 2028 class. As was the case in the 2027 (Sean Kraft), Notre Dame once again kicked off its class with a specialist, with Jones joining kicker Owen Davies, who committed to the Irish back on June 10th.
