Talented LSU football defender enters transfer portal

LSU football defensive lineman Walter Mathis Jr. entered the transfer portal after one year at in Baton Rouge, according to a report from On3's Hayes Fawcett Thursday. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
Mathis appeared in every game as a true freshman. He totaled nine tackles, one pass breakup and one pass deflection. In his first year of college football, he gained valuable experience behind a loaded defensive front.
Hailing from Savannah, GA, Mathis played high school football at Calvary Day School. He also took official visits to Miami, Clemson, and Auburn but ultimately settled on LSU. The three-star prospect was part of the 2025 signing class. He was the No. 50 defensive lineman and No. 66 player out of Georgia, according to Rivals' Industry Rankings.

LSU returns multiple contributors from last season, including Dominick McKinley, and has already brought in transfer defensive tackle Stephiylan Green from Clemson. Add in a 2026 signing class dripping with talent in the trenches, and the Tigers have plenty of options at defensive line.
