TCU Program-Building Coach Dennis Franchione Dead At 75

Longtime college football coach Dennis Franchione, who rose to college football prominence in his three seasons at TCU from 1998 to 2000, has passed away.

He was 75.

The Horned Frogs were 25-10 during his time in Fort Worth and in 2000 went 10-1 under Franchione.

The result of having built the program in that way> Defensive coordinator Gary Patterson was promoted to replace Franchione and he went on to coach the Horned Frogs for more than two decades with outstanding success.

Franchione also had a major impact in the sport with stops at Texas A&M and Alabama.

Franchione oversaw the football programs at five different FBS schools. He made the move to Tuscaloosa after three seasons with the Horned Frogs.

Eventually, though, Franchione returned to The Lone Star State.

The Crimson Tide went 17-8 in his two seasons with Alabama, but with NCAA sanctions an issue there, Franchione left for Texas A&M after the 2002 season.

Franchione replaced the legendary R.C. Slocum at Texas A&M, but was unable to turn the Aggies into a consistent contender in the highly competitive Big 12.

Franchione's record with the Aggies was a mediocre 32-28 before he resigned at the end of the 2007 regular season.

After spending three seasons out of college football, Franchione popped up in Texas again as he was re-hired at Texas State. Franchione was Texas State's coach from 2011 through 2015 … a homecoming of sorts as Franchione had been the school's coach when it was Southwest Texas State in the early 1990s.

Overall, Franchione had a career record of 127-110 at college football's top level and his teams managed 12 winning seasons across a career that spanned 20 years.
