Dave Portnoy didn’t miss a chance to take a shot at MSU after watching the second episode of ESPN’s new six-part Nick Saban documentary.
Nick Saban is widely thought of as the greatest college football coach of all time. Most of this comes from his achievements with the Alabama Crimson Tide, but he did win his first NCAA title with LSU. As most remember though, that wasn’t his first head coaching job.
Saban was first made a head coach by Michigan State University. He ran the program from 1995 to 1999, and his departure was quite controversial too. It has been covered in the second episode of ESPN’s ‘Saban’, titled ‘Death Valley’. Dave Portnoy apparently watched it, and he had a lot to say about it, too.
Dave Portnoy takes ‘little brother’ jab at Michigan State for how they tried to mess with Nick Saban
Michigan State failed to honour a contract promise to their head coach, prompting him to lose faith in the administration and leave for LSU. The university backed out of a promised pay increase by $100,000, with officials reportedly telling him nobody cared about the money.
This is covered in the documentary episode. While watching it, Portnoy, who is a fan of the Michigan Wolverines, couldn’t help but take a shot at his rivals.
“I’m watching the 2nd episode of Saban. I got tears in my eyes laughing at how Michigan State tried to f*** over Saban and ruined their program for like the next 100 years. Such a little brother move,” the Barstool owner wrote on X.
Making fun of a rival is a time-honoured tradition for sports fans, and Portnoy is never one to back away from an opportunity. It is hard to disagree with the fact that MSU made a massive mistake. Saban went on to win seven national championships, while the Spartans have won a whopping zero since the 60s.
