Josh Heupel and the Tennessee Volunteers finished the 2025 college football season going 8-5 overall and 4-4 in SEC matchups. After failing to make a College Football Playoff appearance, they ended things on a sour note, losing to the Illinois Fighting Illini 30-28 in the Music City Bowl.
Tennessee’s eight wins were the fewest under Heupel since his first season with the team in 2021, when they went 7-6. While he and his coaching staff will look to turn things around in 2026, they are looking even further into the future.
Tennessee’s 2027 recruiting class already ranks 19th in the nation with four commitments. They’re expected to make another big addition soon, with Rivals’ Chad Simmons predicting the Volunteers to receive a commitment from wide receiver Kesean Bowman.
“Kesean Bowman has been committed before — previously pledging to Oregon — but the Ducks are no longer in the mix… Since reopening his recruitment, the process has been fluid with Tennessee, Alabama, Vanderbilt and Miami each carrying favorite buzz at different points,” Simmons wrote. “Right now, Tennessee is surging again. Bowman will return to Knoxville next week, and Josh Heupel and the Vols’ staff are pushing hard to land the in-state receiver in this class.”
Bowman would be a major addition for Heupel. Rivals Industry Rankings place him as a four-star recruit, the No. 8 wide receiver and the No. 46 player in the nation. His three unofficial visits with the Volunteers are the second-most he’s taken with any team.
However, along with Tennessee, Alabama, Vanderbilt and Miami, the wide receiver holds offers from the Ohio State Buckeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Georgia Bulldogs and USC Trojans. He’s one of the most sought-after wide receiver recruits in the country.
With an upcoming visit, the Volunteers have the opportunity to increase their lead and make another splash in the 2027 cycle.
