Tennessee football all-time results on September 1

Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891. Throughout its history, the Vols have played on Sept. 1 eight times and have a 5-3 record.

Tennessee last played on Sept. 1 in 2022, defeating Ball State, 59-10, on a Thursday at Neyland Stadium.

Quarterback Hendon Hooker started for the Vols and completed 18-of-25 passing yards for 221 yards and two touchdowns. He also totaled 12 rushing yards and two touchdowns on five attempts.

Running back Jaylen Wright led Tennessee in rushing yards (88). Wright, Dylan Sampson and Jabari Small scored one rushing touchdown each in the season opener.

Cedric Tillman led the Vols in receptions (six) and receiving yards (68). Jimmy Holiday, Jalin Hyatt and Walker Merrill scored one receiving touchdown each.

Tennessee's offense totaled 569 yards.

Kamal Hadden and Tamarion McDonald recorded one interception each against Ball State.

Tennessee also defeated Washington State (1984), Pacific (1990), Syracuse (2001) and Appalachian State (2016) at Neyland Stadium on Sept. 1 all time.

The Vols lost at California (2007) and UCLA (2008), while losing to West Virginia in Charlotte, North Carolina on Sept. 1 in program history.
