True freshman Faizon Brandon has been named as the starting quarterback for Tennessee's season opener against Furman Saturday, Sept. 5.

Several outlets have reported the decision by coach Josh Heupel. Heupel reportedly informed his staff and players Monday morning.

Brandon will be the first true freshman to start the season for Tennessee since Brent Schaeffer in 2004. Schaeffer played against UNLV.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pounder from Greensboro, N.C. beat out redshirt freshman George MacIntyre, who had just a cameo appearance last season. At 6-6 and 201 pounds, there was a concern that MacIntyre might not be able to handle the physical demands of the position in the Southeastern Conference.

Heupel is expected to address the situation with the media later today.
