Tennessee hits the road as a 12.5-point favorite against Georgia Tech, with the total sitting at 55.5.
The Volunteers rolled past Furman 56-9 in their opener, while the Yellow Jackets suffered a painful 14-13 loss to Colorado. But as Week 2 kicks off, we're backing Georgia Tech to bounce back and deliver a sting on home turf.
Here are my Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech prediction and college football picks for Saturday, Sept. 12.
TOP PICK
Who will win Tennessee vs Georgia Tech: Tennessee (82%)
The Tennessee Volunteers remain the more complete team. Furman was a bad opponent, which only strengthens my opinion that these games should never exist in the first place. Despite that, they displayed what was needed against a inferior opponent.
The Volunteers bring back a proven offensive system, a productive rushing attack and more overall depth than the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
The Vols also have a more proven lead back in DeSean Bishop, who ran for nearly 1,100 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. Georgia Tech allowed 183 rushing yards to Colorado in Week 1, creating a favorable matchup for Bishop and Tennessee’s ground game.
The Yellow Jackets are dangerous at home, but they are breaking in a new quarterback after scoring only 13 points in the opener.
Tennessee should control the line of scrimmage and win outright.
Tennessee vs Georgia Tech Over/Under pick: Over 55.5 (50%)
The Vols bring a strong offensive prior into this matchup.
They ranked No. 1 in the SEC in scoring last season, while Georgia Tech allowed 183 rushing yards to Colorado in Week 1. That gives Bishop a path to a productive night.
The Yellow Jackets should contribute, too: Tennessee allowed 28.8 points per game last year and a 60% or better completion rate in 11 of 13 games.
Alberto Mendoza completed 17 of 23 passes in his debut. A blended projection lands near 34-24, making the Over 55.5 appealing.
I'd play to 56.5.
Tennessee vs Georgia Tech prop: Georgia Tech Team Total Over 20.5 (49%)
Georgia Tech’s offense struggled to finish drives against Colorado, but Mendoza’s passing debut was encouraging.
He completed 74% of his passes for 237 yards, and he now faces a Tennessee defense that allowed 28.8 points per game last season. The Yellow Jackets should lean on Justice Haynes and their home-field advantage while using Mendoza’s mobility to extend drives.
Tennessee can create pressure, but Georgia Tech has enough passing ability to reach the low 20s. The team-total Over is the better angle than relying on the Yellow Jackets to cover the full spread.
Tennessee vs Georgia Tech combo
Georgia Tech is the side I'd expect to cover at anything over 10.5 because the Yellowjackets should be able to stay competitive at home.
Tennessee’s defense allowed 28.8 points per game last season, and Alberto Mendoza’s passing ability gives the Yellow Jackets a way to exploit the Volunteers’ secondary.
The Vols offensive efficiency makes them the more likely team to clear this first half line of 17.5 points with ease, while Georgia Tech’s defensive issues create a path to a higher-scoring game.
We should see plenty of offense with a more talented team showing exactly that in winning time.
Tennessee vs Georgia Tech combo
- Georgia Tech +12.5
- Tennessee Over 17.5 First Half Points
- Over 55.5
