Texas A&M Eyes Huge Recruiting Weekend With 150 Prospects Visiting

Texas A&M isn’t treating Saturday’s season opener against Missouri State as just another football game.

For Mike Elko and the Aggies, it’s also shaping up as one of the biggest Texas A&M recruiting weekends of the year, with roughly 150 prospects expected to visit College Station.

That list includes highly regarded 2028 targets Sakura “Sip” Cooper and Za’Kari Johnson, two blue-chip prospects already committed elsewhere.

The Aggies’ 2028 class includes five-star quarterback Donald Tabron III and four-star edge Chance Archangel, giving Elko’s staff an early foundation that could get stronger in a hurry.

Tabron’s commitment is especially important because quarterbacks often become magnets for offensive talent, and Cooper is exactly the kind of playmaker Texas A&M would love to pair with him.

Cooper reportedly produced 1,300 all-purpose yards and 14 touchdowns as a freshman, numbers that explain why he’s quickly become one of the most intriguing receivers in the 2028 cycle.

He’s also expected to visit Texas when the Longhorns host Ohio State next weekend, adding another layer to a recruitment that could eventually turn into an SEC heavyweight fight.

Johnson brings a different kind of value.

Listed as an athlete, he projects as someone capable of playing wide receiver, safety or cornerback. His background at quarterback could also give him the kind of field awareness coaches love in a versatile defensive back.

And the 2028 prospects aren’t the only reason Saturday matters.

Texas A&M also expects to host a major group from its No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, including five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews.

Matthews has reportedly been moving closer toward shutting down his recruitment, making another trip to Kyle Field significant.

This is the modern version of recruiting leverage: get elite prospects on campus, put them in front of a packed Kyle Field crowd and let the game-day atmosphere do some of the selling.

Texas A&M already has one of the strongest recruiting operations in the country. Now Elko has a chance to use opening weekend as another statement.
