In the grand scheme of things, when you’re successful in the SEC, ranking in the College Football Playoff doesn’t matter as much—so long as you can make it to the big show. Texas A&M is in that exact situation right now. With three weeks of the regular season left, anything can happen, and Coach Mike Elko is keeping the team grounded.
The Aggies are in unfamiliar territory when it comes to the CFP, but they’re not out of the woods yet. All the bickering about whether the committee may or may not be biased is just background noise. It makes for great day-to-day engagement on social media and scrutiny of the ranking system. If A&M loses on Saturday against South Carolina, the narrative shifts once again.
So, while A&M acknowledges they’ve earned their ranking, they still need to play quality football to close out the season. One thing we’ve learned is that Coach Elko isn’t allowing them to take any game for granted. That means there’s no such thing as a trap game—especially after last season, when they let an SEC title game trip and CFP berth slip right out of their grasp, culminating in a disastrous showing at the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl, where they were embarrassed as a team and staff by a depleted USC Trojan squad.
The 2025 Aggie football team is on a mission this season. It hasn’t been perfect, but they’ve been doing what good teams do: beating the opponent in front of them in multiple ways. No one knows how the season will end for the guys in Maroon & White, but one thing is clear—this is a different program than in years past.

Texas A&M vsSouth Florida
- Another intriguing matchup. On paper, A&M should dominate, but South Florida has shown it can compete with top-tier programs. This game carries upset potential, and with no prior meetings between the teams, the winner would earn inaugural bragging rights.

Texas A&M vs TBD
- With the way Texas A&M is playing right now, a first-round bye in the CFP is possible as the No. 2 ranked team, with an opponent to be named after the first round.

Texas A&M vs Ole Miss
- Lane Kiffin is one of a kind when it comes to college football. During the Jimbo Fisher era, things were a bit contentious—especially in the early days of NIL—but Kiffin recently made the case that Texas A&M should be ranked higher than No. 3 in the latest rankings. A game between the two would carry a more mutual level of respect, as it could be the first time Coach Elko faces Kiffin as the Aggies’ head coach.

Bonagura – Texas A&M vsTexas Tech
- This rivalry has found new life on social media. However, it’s mostly one-sided recently, with Tech fans believing A&M fans actually care what they think about anything related to the Red Raiders—aside from distant news like Micah Hudson transferring back over the summer. On the field, however, this is an intriguing matchup featuring one of the best linebackers in college football, Jacob Rodriguez, against a stout Texas A&M running game.
Schlabach – Texas A&M vs Texas Tech
- This revived rivalry has taken on a new digital edge, fueled mostly by Tech fans who believe A&M still lives rent-free in their heads. While the social chatter is loud, the on-field stakes are louder. Texas Tech brings a physical defense led by standout linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, who’ll be tasked with slowing down one of the most efficient ground attacks in the SEC. For A&M, it’s less about proving something to Tech and more about staying locked in on their postseason mission.
