Texas A&M gets real about who they are at SEC Media Days

For Texas A&M Aggies football fans, life may exist entirely on the spectrums or vacillate between going full Aggy and experiencing the deep and enduring trauma of Battered Aggie Syndrome.

The program’s enduring ineptitude since winning its last national title in 1938 sparked enough #AggieFactThursdays to turn into an entire book.

Aggys rode high as A&M trended upwards in going from 8-5 in head coach Mike Elko’s first season to 12-2 in 2026 to secure the proram’s first College Football Playoff appearance.

The Ags even landed a home game at Kyle Field!

What happened then triggered the Battered Aggie Syndrome, as A&M’s offense managed 326 yards of total offense against Miami, but only got into the red zone three times, kicking one field goal in the 10-3 loss while turning the ball over three times in the loss.

It was the second straight loss to the Aggies after the Longhorns — and Arch Manning — ran away from A&M in the second half of the Lone Star Showdown in Austin as Texas won the second half decisively, 24-7, in the 27-17 victory.

The second straight loss in the renewed rivalry means that Texas A&M hasn’t won in the series since 2010, a particularly lengthy three-game skid.

Since escaping the shadow of big brother by moving to the SEC for the 2012 season, the Aggies still haven’t even played for the conference championship, not even at Johnny Manziel’s Heisman-winning peak — the last league title for A&M came in the Big 12 in 1998 after playing in back-to-back title games. Aggieland didn’t see another Big 12 championship game appearance before Texas A&M departed the conference.

Let that brief history serve as the backdrop for Elko appearing at SEC Media Days on Thursday with outcomes that, objectively, read as commendably humble.

The headline?

“After last year’s playoff run, how do you keep this team from becoming satisfied?“

“I show them our trophy case and it’s empty,” Elko replied.

In the sense that the emptiness could possibly be fortunate, it presumably means that the “20—” future championship trophy presented to former head coach Jimbo Fisher in 2018 doesn’t reside in the A&M trophy case.

Good on that?

“Listen, we live in a lot of worlds, so we’re obviously happy with the things we accomplished, happy with the direction of our program, but it’s also not lost on us that we haven’t won the hardware that we’re searching for,” Elko continued.

“That gets us into a mindset of growth and getting back to work to go finish this thing a little bit better than we did last year and put ourself in a better position maybe to compete for some trophies.”

To accomplish that task, A&M needs more from starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who didn’t handle the end of the season well, throwing eight of his 12 interceptions in the final six games, including zero touchdown passes and four interceptions to finish the season those losses to Texas and Miami.

Reed’s struggles sparked another candid exchange between a reporter and Elko.

“You and Marcel had mentioned going into last season and in retrospect maybe the criticism around him not being a passer was a bit unfair. Curious if you feel like maybe people still doubt him and what people get wrong about him still?”

“Yeah, no, I think the narrative around Marcel has been pretty fair,” Elko said.

The hope, for Elko and the Aggies, is that Reed can improve his accuracy to raise his consistency level and smooth out the the peaks and valleys that swung wildly between elite play and puzzling misfires and poor decisions.

Between the Aggy-ness and the Battered Aggie-ness.

Projected as a College Football Playoff contender once again, the question is whether Reed and A&M can break through, riding improved play to the program’s first SEC championship game and its first CFP win.

If it happens, it’s been a long time coming, but getting there will certainly require the steady, candid competency that Elko has already put on display, on the field and at the podium in Tampa.
