Texas A&M HC should reach out to former Aggie QB for open OC job

Texas A&M’s 2025 regular season ended at 11-1 and 7-1 in the SEC, but this will officially be the last year for second-year offensive coordinator Collin Klein, who officially accepted the head coaching job with his alma mater, Kansas State, after Chris Klieman announced his retirement earlier this week.
While it was reported by reputable sources on Wednesday that Klein was headed to Manhattan (KS), things became official on Thursday night, as head coach Mike Elko will be looking for his next play caller, who could already be on the coaching staff, knowing the current WR coach Holmon Wiggins is experienced enough to take over next season.
However, after signing his six-year extension and staying put in College Station for the time being, Mike Elko will take his time in searching for the program’s next offensive coordinator, especially knowing that Klein will stay with the Aggies during the College Football Playoff as the primary playcaller.
“It’s probably not solidified in any way, shape or form yet. The reports tend to precede anything official,” Elko said. “When you hire good people, you anticipate those opportunities will come… If we’re going this right, that will be a piece of it, no different than losing players to the NFL.”
Now, some may think I’m crazy for suggesting this, but former Texas A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson, who is currently serving as the Quarterbacks Coach, should be one of Elko’s first calls in the coming weeks just to test the waters. However, Johnson is on track to become an OC in the NFL, but that could take longer than expected.
Still, Johnson has done an excellent job this season with the Texans, helping backup quarterback Davis Mills lead Houston to several wins while throwing for five touchdowns and one interception amid starter C.J. Stroud’s injury.
While Houston’s scoring offense is ranked third-to-last in the NFL, transitioning to a major college program for at least one or two seasons would provide a future opportunity for an OC job in the NFL or a potential head coaching opportunity in college.
