Texas A&M Is the SEC’s Most Dangerous Undervalued Team in 2026

Texas A&M football enters the 2026 season in a strange spot.
Mike Elko’s Aggies are fresh off an 11-win campaign and the program’s first College Football Playoff appearance, yet they’re rarely discussed with the SEC’s biggest championship favorites.

That could become a spectacular preseason mistake.
The Aggies didn’t stumble into national relevance. Elko built a physical team that won its first 11 games last season, finished 7-1 in conference play and sent 10 players into the 2026 NFL Draft, tying the program record.
Texas A&M rewarded Elko before the postseason with a six-year contract running through 2031.
Now comes the difficult part: proving 2025 wasn’t the ceiling.
Quarterback Marcel Reed gives A&M a legitimate reason to believe it can survive another SEC meat grinder. Reed completed 62.1 percent of his passes last season for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
He also rushed for 493 yards and six scores, producing 3,662 yards of total offense. That’s not a caretaker quarterback. That’s a proven playmaker entering his second full season as the starter.
His supporting cast could be nasty. Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton arrives after catching 42 passes for 511 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025.
He joins Mario Craver, an explosive receiver who averaged 21.6 yards per catch during his freshman season at Mississippi State. Together, they give Reed the size, speed and downfield firepower to punish defenses that crowd the box.
The concern is obvious: four new offensive line starters must keep Reed upright.
Alabama transfer Wilkin Formby should help after earning an 82.1 pass-blocking grade across 816 snaps last season, but chemistry won’t arrive automatically.
If the rebuilt line struggles, the Aggies’ playoff ambitions could disappear quickly.
Defensively, Elko still has the pieces to make opponents miserable.
DJ Hicks anchors the interior, while Northwestern transfer Anto Saka brings 12 career sacks and generated 30 pressures in only 196 pass-rush snaps last season.
Rickey Gibson III and Tawfiq Byard also strengthen a secondary loaded with interchangeable options.
Texas A&M won’t receive an easy runway. Road games against LSU, Missouri, Alabama, South Carolina and Oklahoma lead into a Friday-night showdown with Texas at Kyle Field.

That schedule is brutal. The roster is good enough to beat it.
The Aggies aren’t a trendy sleeper anymore. They’re an established CFP threat being treated like one – and that’s exactly what makes them dangerous.
