It’s official: former Kentucky Wildcat tight ends coach Derek Shay will be joining the Texas A&M coaching staff. While his exact role has not yet been announced, the move is considered a strong addition following the news that current tight ends coach Christian Ellsworth will be joining Collin Klein at Kansas State.
On the field, Texas A&M’s tight ends have been far more than complementary pieces. Senior Nate Boerkircher and junior Theo Melin Öhrström have combined for 332 receiving yards and four touchdowns, while their blocking has served as a quiet engine behind the Aggies’ offense. Thanks in large part to their efforts, A&M has allowed only 12 sacks and produced over 200 rushing yards per game.
Head coach Mike Elko isn’t standing still, and reporter Pete Nakos has confirmed that Derek Shay has been hired. Shay spent the 2024 season as Kentucky’s Senior Offensive Analyst and Run Game Specialist, and with the departure of longtime head coach Mark Stoops from Lexington, several assistants are expected to move on.
