Texas A&M Opens Fall Camp With CFP Pressure at Full Blast

Texas A&M football is done celebrating its breakthrough. Now Mike Elko’s Aggies have to prove it wasn’t a one-season spike.

Elko is scheduled to meet with reporters Tuesday, August 4, before Texas A&M opens preseason practice Wednesday.

That first whistle will launch the most important fall camp of his tenure – not because the Aggies are rebuilding, but because expectations have finally caught up with the roster.

Texas A&M finished 11-2 in 2025, tied for the SEC’s best regular-season record at 7-1 and reached the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history. The ending was brutal, however, as Miami escaped Kyle Field with a 10-3 first-round victory.

That loss changed the assignment for 2026. Making the playoff is no longer the dream. Getting there again – and actually doing something once the Aggies arrive – is the new standard.

Elko’s roster turnover makes that challenge fascinating. Texas A&M tied its program record with 10 selections in the 2026 NFL Draft, including wide receiver KC Concepcion, who went No. 24 overall to the Cleveland Browns.

Six Aggies were selected on Day 2 alone, leaving enormous holes across both lines.

The response wasn’t subtle. Elko attacked the transfer portal, and the current On3 tracker lists 19 incoming players.

Former Alabama receiver Isaiah Horton, offensive tackle Wilkin Formby, cornerback Rickey Gibson and edge rusher Anto Saka headline a class built to contribute immediately.

Texas A&M isn’t trying to patiently replace NFL talent. It’s attempting to reload without surrendering its place in the national race.

Everything still revolves around Marcel Reed.

The returning quarterback enters 2026 with 5,407 career passing yards, 41 touchdown passes, 1,085 rushing yards and 14 scores on the ground.

Reed’s athleticism can wreck a defense, but Texas A&M needs him to become a more consistent closer after the offense produced only three points in its playoff loss.

Fall camp will also put a spotlight on linebacker Daymion Sanford’s recovery. Sanford has accumulated 94 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks over 39 career games. His availability matters for a defense replacing a mountain of NFL-caliber production.

Safety Marcus Ratcliffe gives that unit a stabilizing presence. The returning captain owns 163 career tackles and 35 starts, making him one of the roster’s most proven voices.

The Aggies have depth, experience and another playoff-caliber roster on paper. What they don’t have is the luxury of sneaking up on anyone.

Texas A&M broke through in 2025. Beginning Wednesday, the fight to prove it can last officially begins.
