The more things change, the more they stay the same. Texas A&M still has a few staff positions left to fill, and head coach Mike Elko is once again promoting from within to fill them.
On Thursday, Texas A&M announced that internal staffers John Perry will take over as the wide receivers coach and Joey Lynch will step in as the new quarterbacks coach. The news regarding Perry comes as no surprise, as Coach Elko mentioned a few weeks ago that Perry would take a more active role with the receivers. On the other hand, while there were some rumblings about Lynch taking over as the QB coach, many fans were hoping for an outside set of eyes to bring something new to the position group.
After the second straight season in which it appeared that Marcel Reed struggled at the tail end of the year, there was a belief that the team might look externally for a different approach. However, the Aggies did finish 11-2, and if you eliminate some of the mental errors at the end of the season, it’s entirely possible they beat Miami. Either way, this announcement naturally came with mixed reactions.
Perry was previously the assistant wide receivers coach, making this a natural transition. Lynch, a senior offensive analyst with over 20 years of experience, will now take on a more hands‑on role as he works to elevate the quarterback room to the next level.
