Texas A&M putting together a championship-caliber secondary recruiting class

What a weekend for the third-ranked Texas A&M football program.

The undefeated Aggies rallied from a 27-point, first-half deficit on Saturday afternoon to beat South Carolina 31-30 inside Kyle Field. The victory keeps Mike Elko and his program on track to play for the SEC Championship and all but clinched a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff.

Speaking of Elko, he then signed a six-year contract extension that will make him among the highest paid coaches in the sport.

In the middle of it all, Elko and the Aggies picked up a couple major commitments in the 2027 cycle, securing pledges from prized in-state safety JayQuan Snell and one of the most sought-after cornerbacks in the land Raylaun Henry.

The pledge from Snell and Henry made Elko and his staff as happy as any other major development that transpired in the last 48 hours.

Currently No. 4 in the Rivals Industry Recruiting Standings, Texas A&M has a great chance to finish with the No. 1 class in 2027. It will be a haul highlighted by this special group in the secondary.

The class jewel is Rivals No. 1 safety and No. 12 prospect overall Kamarui Dorsey. The Hampton (Ga.) standout chose to play in College Station over Georgia and a slew of others.

“I think he fits what MIke Elko likes at defensive back,” Rivals Director of Scouting Charles Power said. “He is a rangy, physical, athletic safety that can really play all over the defense. He has a lot of versatility and is an imposing presence in the secondary.”

Snell is the No. 3 safety in the Rivals 300 and No. 29 player in the land. He gave Elko his word over the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State and many others.

“Snell is a riser as a junior,” Power stated. “He’s played at a really high level. Had a dominant performance in a win over national power Duncanville. They give A&M two NFL talents.”

Henry is the Rivals Industry’s No. 8 cornerback and No. 49 prospect nationally. Alabama and Ohio State were his other finalists. He adds to a cornerback class that already included Rivals300 athlete Hakim Frampton.

“Raylaun Henry has elite length,” Power said. “Has played a national schedule at St Frances. It’s clear to see he and these other defensive backs fit the physical profile and have the high-end traits Elko and company like, and point to the emphasis of adding big bodies.”

Texas A&M is in the thick of it for a couple major targets at the cornerback position moving forward. That list starts with the Rivals Industry’s No. 1 ranked overall prospect John Meredith. The Arlington (Texas) Trinity standout is trending towards the Aggies on the Rivals Prediction Machine including my forecast. Alabama and Ohio State are a couple other contenders but it feels like Texas A&M is setting the pace.

“It’s like family there and the relationship there is incredible,” Meredith has said in the past.

Power says Meredith is one of the best to come out in a few cycles.

“Meredith has elite physical tools. Big-time athlete, rangy, gives up essentially zero, shuts down his half of the field on Friday nights and plays offense which we love to see.”

Beyond Meredith, Texas A&M is a front-runner for five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson.

“If A&M is able to land this group it would be an elite secondary haul and it would be hard to see a scenario where a school signs a better group if they’re able to cap that off,” Power said.
