Texas A&M’s 2026 season is just over five months away, and while the Aggies kicked off the spring practice season last Friday, coach Mike Elko, who enters his third season at the helm, stated that his team is a ways away from reaching its potential after making the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history just a short four months ago.

This offseason, after 20-plus players departed the program, including a nation-leading 13 former starters invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, Elko and his revamped coaching staff added 17 transfer portal additions, combined with 25 of 26 freshmen from the 2026 signing class, who have all looked the part thus far during the start of the spring season.

However, starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who will now play behind four new starting offensive linemen next season, will make or break Texas A&M’s chances of returning to the CFP. Still, the redshirt junior deserves plenty of grace after throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards and 25 touchdowns, paired with 493 yards and six scores on the ground, while four of his eight interceptions came during the Aggies’ final two losses to Texas and Miami.

On Wednesday, ESPN writer Jake Trotter selected Marcel Reed as his returning starter with the “most to prove” in 2026, and to no surprise, referenced his poor performance at the end of the 2025 season, despite leading the Aggies to an 11-0 start to the year.

Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed did lead the Aggies to an 11-0 start. But in Texas A&M’s two biggest games — against rival Texas and against Miami in the opening round of the playoff — Reed took eight sacks, threw four interceptions and didn’t account for one touchdown, passing or rushing. In turn, the Aggies lost both games. Texas was red hot at the end of last season and Miami went on to make the national championship game, but those are the caliber of teams A&M will have to beat if it’s going to become a true national contender. The pressure is on Reed to play his best when it matters most in 2026.

Marcel Reed is by far one of the best athletes in college football, and while his late-season struggles were on display for a national audience, which has created an unfair narrative, the Tennessee native possesses the necessary tools to become a trusted pocket passer if his footwork and decision-making improve.

After adding veteran wide receiver Isaiah Horton from the transfer portal, Texas A&M’s WR rotation is widely considered an elite unit, and under new OC Holmon Wiggins, Reed should thrive in his up-tempo passing attack that will force secondaries to bracket star receiver Mario Craver, and leave the rest of the rotation open for business.
