Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed's struggles explained in one telling stat

Texas A&M's chances of making the College Football Playoff took a nosedive after it fell to Kentucky at home, 31-21, in the most shocking loss under third-year coach Mike Elko. While the defense struggled, allowing 405 total yards, starting quarterback Marcel Reed completed 53% of his passes, threw one touchdown, ran for another score, and threw two interceptions.

Since taking over as the full-time starter midway through the 2024 season, Marcel Reed's dual-threat skill set has been intriguing on the field, and he made a name for himself in the Aggies' 38-23 comeback win over LSU, posting 62 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Reed's identity has always been to run first, setting up play-action opportunities to hit his receivers in stride, but his arm talent has been a question since his high school days. After former starting QB Conner Weigman transferred to Houston, Reed took over last fall and dazzled the nation in A&M's 41-40 road win over Notre Dame.

Throwing for a career-high 360 yards and two touchdowns in the historic road win, Reed helped lead the Aggies to an 11-0 start and the program's first trip to the College Football Playoff.

However, Reed's downfall seemingly began during A&M's 31-30 comeback win over South Carolina, where he threw three interceptions and zero touchdowns in the first half before leading the Aggies back from a 30-3 deficit and throwing for another career-high 439 yards and three touchdowns.

Ignoring the Aggies' shutout win over Samford, back-to-back losses to Texas on the road, and Miami in the first round of the CFP, which included under 250 yards passing and four interceptions with zero touchdowns from Reed in both losses, ending Texas A&M's magical season.

With the promise of improving his accuracy, touch, and eliminating mental mistakes, Marcel Reed has thrown for 632 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions in all three games this season, and thanks to TexAgs analyst Luke Evangelist for the deep dive, Reed has reportedly thrown 21 interceptions in 19 career appearances vs. Power Four programs in two seasons and three games this year.

Texas A&M will now face LSU on the road, but after defeating the Tigers, led by former coach Brian Kelly, 49-25 last season in Baton Rouge, this year's LSU squad will be a much tougher opponent after falling to Ole Miss 32-24 on Saturday night.
