Texas A&M’s future under coach Mike Elko looks extremely bright, on paper, at least, especially from a recruiting perspective, as the Aggies currently hold the No. 1-ranking in the 2027 recruiting class, while this season’s transfer class, made up of 17 new additions, should have A&M back on track towards making a run to the College Football Playoff for the second straight season.
While the 2026 season is the primary focus, ESPN took a deeper look into Texas A&M’s future ranking, looking ahead to the 2027 campaign, which could feature a roster completely revamped, while writer Adam Rittenberg believes that starting quarterback Marcel Reed could remain under center after this season, especially if he makes the jump many of us expect.
If Reed returns after the 2026 season, backup Brady Hart, freshman Helaman Casuga, and 2027 four-star QB Jayce Johnson fill out a quarterback room with more depth compared to previous seasons. In the trenches, Rittenberg is high on the current depth chart, now including Northwestern transfer edge Anto Saka and former North Carolina defensive lineman CJ Mims.
Now led by senior DL DJ Hicks and rising sophomore edge Marco Jones, this group should lead to improved run defense and provide a more consistent collective pass rush effort, even after losing unanimous All-American edge Cashius Howell, who was selected in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Along the offensive line, the loss of four 2025 starters led Elko and O-line coach Adam Cushing to land transfer commitments from tackles Tyree Adams and Wilkin Formby, paired with veteran SEC guards Trovon Baugh and Coen Echols. This group, combined with several second-year players, is much deeper than last season and will likely lead Cushing to use a rotation.
Rittenberg also noted that Mike Elko’s roster management has been top-tier, avoiding a drop-off after 10 players were selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, replacing key starters, including the addition of former Alabama wide receiver Isaiah Horton, who pairs very well with junior wideout Mario Craver. In terms of Texas A&M’s “star power,” Marcel Reed, Mario Craver, and three of the Aggies’ 17 transfer additions fit the term.
“Reed certainly belongs in this category despite his late-season struggles. He will again be targeting Craver, a third-team All-SEC selection last fall who averaged 15.5 yards per catch. Ratcliffe is back and could vault himself into all-league consideration. Notable transfers include Formby and Saka up front, and Horton, who had eight touchdowns on 42 receptions last fall.”
Texas A&M has the talent to make a run back to the CFP, and it will be up to the newly formed coaching staff, now including former WR coach-turned-OC Holmon Wiggins and defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill, whom Mike Elko trusts completely to get the job done now and in the future.
