Texas A&M football may have assembled the nation’s No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, but Mike Elko is already hunting for the next wave of defensive talent.

Four-star 2028 cornerback Jordan Hicks has emerged as an early Aggies target after recording 62 tackles, five interceptions and five pass breakups last season.

Those numbers don’t describe a passive defensive back waiting for the ball to find him. Hicks attacks plays, creates turnovers and brings the kind of production that forces major programs to pay attention.

Texas A&M is one of eight schools reportedly remaining in the California prospect’s recruitment. Michigan, Syracuse, Washington and Vanderbilt have made strong early impressions, but the Aggies have secured something important in a future visit.

Hicks has said he plans to attend a game at Texas A&M, giving Elko and new cornerbacks coach Bryant Gross-Armiento an opportunity to make their pitch inside Kyle Field.

That setting has become one of the Aggies’ strongest recruiting weapons.

A packed stadium, an SEC atmosphere and more than 100,000 fans can turn a routine unofficial visit into a defining moment for a young prospect.

Texas A&M has converted several recent game-day visits into commitments, and Hicks could become another major test of that formula.

The Aggies’ immediate recruiting focus remains on protecting their loaded 2027 class.

Four-star linebacker Mikahi Allen recently joined a group ranked No. 1 nationally, and that commitment could complete the class unless Elko’s staff creates room for another addition or has to defend against late flips.

The running back board remains unsettled. Five-star Landon Williams-Callis included Texas A&M among his finalists, though Texas is viewed as the favorite ahead of his expected August 1 decision.

Elko and running backs coach Trooper Taylor are also continuing their pursuit of SaRod Baker, a four-star prospect currently committed to Texas Tech.

Those battles matter now, but recruiting never waits.

By next summer, the 2028 cycle will command the spotlight, and Hicks possesses the profile to become one of its most heavily pursued defensive backs.

His combination of tackling production, coverage instincts and turnover ability fits naturally into an Elko defense built around versatility and aggression.

Texas A&M hasn’t taken control of Hicks’ recruitment yet.

The Aggies have, however, earned a chance to bring him into their environment and show him what Saturdays in College Station look like.

Once Hicks steps inside a roaring Kyle Field, the recruitment could get serious in a hurry.
