Texas A&M WR Lands on Freshman of Year Watch List

Texas A&M freshman wide receiver Aaron Gregory hasn’t played a college snap yet, but the buzz around him is already getting louder.

Gregory was named Wednesday to the preseason watch list for the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, putting the highly regarded Aggies newcomer among 37 FBS players being monitored as potential breakout freshmen in 2026.

And when you look at his résumé, it’s easy to understand why.

The 6-foot-plus playmaker arrived in College Station after putting together a monster career at Douglas County High School in Georgia. Gregory finished his prep run with 163 receptions for 2,930 yards and 20 touchdowns, averaging an eye-popping 18.0 yards per catch.

That 2,930-yard total became the school’s career receiving record.

Gregory also helped Douglas County win 33 games over three seasons, including consecutive trips to the state semifinals before reaching the quarterfinals during his senior year.

Recruiting services viewed him as one of the best receivers in the 2026 class. Gregory earned consensus four-star status and was ranked as high as the No. 84 overall player nationally by 247Sports, while ESPN placed him inside its top 300 at No. 75.

He wasn’t just piling up stats against questionable competition, either.

Gregory earned three all-state selections, multiple first-team all-region honors and spots in several major postseason showcases, including the Navy All-American Bowl, Under Armour All-America Game and Polynesian Bowl.

Now comes the interesting part for Texas A&M.

The Aggies don’t need Gregory to arrive as a finished product, but his combination of production, downfield ability and big-game experience makes him one of the more intriguing young weapons on Mike Elko’s roster.

Freshman receivers can sometimes disappear behind veteran depth, especially in the SEC. Gregory, however, has the résumé of a player capable of forcing his way onto the field.

That makes this watch-list recognition more than just another preseason honor.

If Gregory translates even a portion of his high school explosiveness to the college level, Texas A&M could have another legitimate weapon emerging in its passing game — and the Shaun Alexander Award voters may have gotten an early look at one of the SEC’s next breakout names.

The semifinalist list will be cut to 14 players in November before five finalists are selected in December.
