Navigating modern college football is a challenge coaches didn’t have to deal with in the past. College coaches now have a lot to manage. From the transfer portal to recruiting with NIL and agents, it resembles managing a pro team but without a lot of the regulations that help the pro system work. Especially, in regards to agents.
While meeting the media in Orlando ahead of tomorrow’s Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Michigan, Texas Football coach Steve Sarkisian spoke about a lot of the challenges he faces.
“It’s so strategic, because it’s one, about need,” Sarkisian said. “It’s two, about money, you know. And the cost. And, where’s the market? And which agent are you dealing with?”
Steve Sarkisian speaks on constructing rosters through NIL and some strong words with the challenges of dealing with specific agents:

Sark says dealing with agents might be the biggest challenge because the industry is currently totally unregulated. The UT coach says sometimes you deal with someone that has no idea what they’re doing.
“There are some agents that are rational,” Sark continued. “And there’s some that this is their first time being an agent. I don’t even know if they’re licensed to be agents. But all of a sudden, they get to be agents because we have no certification process in college football. In the NFL you have to be certified. In college football, it might be their college roommate their freshman year who’s their agent right now. And this guy’s throwing numbers at you and it’s like, ‘We can’t even deal with this.’ Like, you just move on. And so, it’s unfortunate. And we’ll get there in college football. But right now, it’s a tough situation.”
Sarkisian deals with agents everyday now. Be it recruiting, keeping the players you have on campus or working the transfer portal. “I’m probably going to be on the phone with an agent today that’s going to throw a number at me that I’m like, ‘Good luck. I hope you get it. If you don’t, call us back.”
