On Saturday afternoon, the Texas Longhorns continued to struggle against Georgia. While Texas kept things close at the start, they collapsed in the second half. Even though there were not a lot of positives to take from their third loss of the season, one bright spot was Ty’Anthony Smith.
In the Longhorns‘ latest SEC battle, the Texas native led the team in tackles with nine and tackles for a loss with two. He also had six solo tackles and was the only Longhorns player to finish with more than three. Smith’s efforts didn’t spark Texas to a win, but his play stood out on a night full of frustration.

His latest performance was a reflection of what he has done all season. With ten games in the books, Smith has put together the best season of his college career. He has set career highs in tackles with 44, sacks with 2, and forced fumbles with two. The Longhorns’ sophomore has seen a jump in playing time and has been rewarded for Steve Sarkisian’s faith in his abilities.
With only two games left in the season, Smith still has time to build on his success. The Longhorns’ playoff hopes took a major hit with their loss to Georgia, but they still have two important games left on the schedule. That includes a matchup with Arkansas this weekend and a Texas A&M team next week that is ranked No. 3.

For Texas to have a chance at slipping into the College Football Playoff, it will need to win both those games. That is why Smith will be counted heavily with no margin for error. If Smith can replicate his play against Georgia over the final two weeks, then the defense should get a much-needed boost.
