TheTexas football program is currently gearing up for the 2026 college football season, which is slated to get underway in less than two months. Texas is coming off a disappointing 2025 season in which it missed the playoff altogether despite its recent expansion to 12 teams.
Recently, at SEC Media Day, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian continued his sympathy tour for the Longhorns’ voluntary decision to play Ohio State in the first game of the year last year, which they lost.
“If we beat Ohio State (last year), we’re surely in much better place for the playoffs. If I don’t play Ohio State & play Jones Jr. High, we’re 10-2 & our losses are to Georgia & Florida & we’re a playoff team,” said Sarkisian, per Brett McMurphy of On3 Sports on X, formerly Twitter.

Sarkisian has been attempting to convince the college football world that the Longhorns’ loss to the Buckeyes to open up last season should count as a win in the eyes of the playoff committee, but unfortunately for Texas, they did not see it that way, and the Longhorns were left out of the final field.
The Longhorns also lost to Florida during the regular season, which didn’t exactly look great on their resume. This season, Texas will get another shot at the Buckeyes, this time in their home stadium, and there is sure to be plenty of discourse about just how much the loser should be penalized when playoff time comes around.
Before that, Texas will have a tune-up game against Texas State. That game is slated to get underway on September 5 at 12:30 pm ET from Austin.
