With the College Football Playoff set to 12 teams for the 2026-27 season, there is a legitimate chance of expanding it to 24 teams at some point down the road. Perhaps sooner, rather than later. The idea of a 24-team format has been controversial, to say the least, and it sounds like Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian doesn’t like the idea of another expansion.
Sarkisian, who is 52 years old, claimed he would rather the CFP go back to four teams instead of expanding to 24, according to Evan Vieth of Inside Texas. Sarkisian explains how a 24-team format creates the notion that it is “playoffs for bust” for every program in college football, and he doesn’t like it.
“I think there’s so many factors. I’ve gone on record saying I’d rather go back to four. Here’s my issue: I understand why people want to go to 24, but we are now in a world where fanbases are living under this umbrella of playoff or bust.
“I don’t agree with that, that’s not true. You had the opportunity to compete for a national championship during those 12 regular-season games, and I felt like when we were at four teams, those four teams were held in very high regard, and you earned your opportunity to be one of those four teams.”
Texas failed to reach the playoffs last season after finishing with a 10-3 record. Had the format been 24 teams instead of 12, the Longhorns more than likely would have participated in the postseason.
While the 24-team format will continue to gain momentum, Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns will focus on reaching next season’s College Football Playoff, consisting of 12 teams.
