The Texas Longhorns are trending quickly to flip an in-state commit. There is a lot of optimism coming from an excellent official visit.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns are beginning to heat up on the recruiting trail. For their 2027 recruiting class, there are several top targets who were just in Austin for a massive official visit weekend. There is an expectation that a lot of good news could be on the horizon.

One interesting 2027 recruiting target to keep a close eye on is Houston (Texas) Langham Creek linebacker Jhadyn Nelson, and for several reasons. Not only was Nelson on campus this past weekend, but he is also an extremely talented defender who just so happens to be committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Nelson has been committed to head coach Joey McGuire and the Red Raiders since March 18, but that hasn’t stopped other programs from pushing for him.

According to Rivals’ national recruiting insider Sam Spiegelman, Texas is trending in a great direction to potentially make this flip happen. On top of Spiegelman’s Intel, I have also spoken to some folks on the Texas side who are optimistic about the team’s chances. Nelson will be someone to keep a close eye on over the next couple of weeks.

Texas currently holds a commitment from Kingwood (Texas) High School linebacker Cade Haug, but the team very much wants to sign at least one more linebacker. Nelson is a player that the team has put its focus on.

Jhadyn Nelson’s recruiting background

Nelson’s recruiting rankings are a bit all over the place right now, rated as either a three- or four-star player, depending on which of the major recruiting platforms you look at. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Nelson currently sits as the No. 117 overall player, the No. 9 linebacker, and the No. 16 player from the state of Texas for the 2027 recruiting class. Rivals is highest on the Lone Star standout, pegged as the No. 41 overall player in the country.

The offer list for Nelson mirrors the high end of that ranking, featuring offers from some of the best programs in college football. Some of his top offers include the Longhorns, the Red Raiders, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas A&M, Miami, Auburn, Nebraska, Missouri, Kentucky, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Arizona, UCLA, Mississippi State, Baylor, SMU, UNC, and Houston, among several others.

In ten games as a junior, Nelson put together a tremendous season for Langham Creek. The 6-3, 210-pound linebacker managed to collect 59 total tackles, ten tackles for loss, three sacks, and four forced fumbles. That was coming off a strong sophomore season, where Nelson made 42 total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and a fumble recovery in eight games.
