Texas QB Trey Owens plans to enter Transfer Portal

Texas Longhorns quarterback Trey Owens plans to enter the Transfer Portal, On3 has learned. This comes after he spent the previous two seasons in Austin.

Owens played his high school football at Cy-Fair in Cypress, Texas. There, he was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2024. He was the 274th-ranked player overall and the 20th-ranked quarterback overall in that recruiting cycle.

A star during his time in high school, Owens was both an All-America and two-time all-district honoree. On top of that, he would be selected to play in both the 2023 U.S. Army Bowl and the 2024 All-American Bowl. During that high school career, he would compile 6,411 passing yards and 81 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions on 418 of 597 attempts.

In 2024, Trey Owens would appear in two games, using his redshirt. During that time, he completed two passes for 19 yards. That was on 4.8 yards per attempt. He did not record any stats during the 2025 season, though.

Changes coming to the Transfer Portal

This offseason, the Transfer Portal is undergoing several major changes. That notably includes the removal of the spring transfer window, making the winter the only time players will be able to transfer. On top of that, the winter window was moved from December to January and shortened in length.

It was the Division I Football Oversight Committee the voted to make that window a 10-day one in January. The NCAA Division I Administration Committee initially only approved the move of the window and later approved the decision to shorten it as well.

It’s hard to predict exactly how this will change things. Certainly, the hope was that it would help coaches with calendar concerns. On top of that, though, it will likely mean players considering transferring flood in during the winter.
