Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire agrees to contract through 2032

Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire has agreed to a new contract that will run through the 2032 season and average at least $6.8 million per year, a Tech athletics spokesman said on Tuesday, Dec. 2.

The contract starts at $6.5 million for the 2026 season and increases by $100,000 per year, topping out at $7.1 million for the 2032 season. McGuire can also earn up to $1.2 million in bonuses each year. Not included in that amount is a $250,000 retention bonus that McGuire can collect if he’s still employed by Tech on May 1, 2027.

The terms of the contract were agreed in principle. As of earlier Tuesday, the spokesman said, it was still awaiting signatures and approval by the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents.

“We believe the future of Texas Tech football has never been brighter under Coach McGuire’s leadership,” Tech athletics director Kirby Hocutt said in a prepared statement.

“Our success this season is not a one-year plan. We fully intend to be an annual contender in the Big 12 Conference with our eyes on the College Football Playoff each and every season. We have the right leader in Coach McGuire to keep elevating this program, and this contract extension is a reflection of our investment in sustaining this success for years to come.”

The new contract replaces the six-year agreement McGuire has been working under that was scheduled to run through the 2028 season.

To fire McGuire without cause, Tech would owe him 70% of the remaining value of the deal. That buyout increases to 80% of the remaining value should the Red Raiders win the Big 12 championship beginning with the 2026 season.

The money owed to McGuire under such a buyout would be offset by his future earnings within the term of the deal, and he would have a duty to seek other employment at a current market rate.

Should McGuire leave the university by his own choice, he would owe Texas Tech 50% of the remaining value of the deal to take a job at another Big 12 school or another program in the state of Texas or 40% of the remaining value to take any other football-related position.

Among the other bonuses in the $1.2 million pool:

∎ $150,000 for participating in a Big 12 championship game or $350,000 for winning a Big 12 championship game.

∎ $150,000 for each round Texas Tech participates in a 12- or 16-team College Football Playoff.

∎ $400,000 for winning a College Football Playoff national championship.

McGuire is scheduled to make a little more than $4.55 million during the current contract year, according to the college head-coaches’ database maintained by USA TODAY Sports.

McGuire is in his fourth season at Tech with a 34-17 record. It’s the most victories by a Tech head coach through 51 games since Jim Carlen had the same number from 1970-73. Carlen’s team finished the 1973 season 11-1.

“I couldn’t be more thankful for Kirby Hocutt and our administration for the belief in this football program,” McGuire said in Tech’s announcement. “I’ve said it countless times, but my family and I love Lubbock, this university and this fan base. We expect to continue to elevate this program where appearances in the Big 12 title game, like this Saturday, and the College Football Playoff are expected on an annual basis.”

Texas Tech is 11-1 this season, 8-1 in the Big 12, and will play Brigham Young in the conference championship game on Saturday, Dec. 6, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
