Miami (Ohio) is known in football circles as a cradle of coaches. Arguably no university has produced more coaching greats.
For the Texas Tech football program, Miami (Ohio) has become known as a good place to find players looking to make a step up to a Power Four program. Wide receiver Reggie Virgil and offensive lineman Will Jados left the RedHawks last winter via the NCAA transfer portal and started every game this season for the Red Raiders.
On Tuesday, Jan. 6, Tech took in another Miami (Ohio) player as edge defender Adam Trick committed to the Red Raiders, according to multiple reports. Trick announced his pledge on Wednesday. Trick earned first-team all-Mid-American Conference recognition this season after being credited with 59 tackles, 12 1/2 tackles for loss, 8 1/2 sacks, 5 passes defended and 3 forced fumbles — all career highs for a player in his fourth season.
He drew interest in the portal from Florida, Wisconsin and Tennessee, according to On3 Sports.
Trick, listed by Miami as 6-foot-4 and 249 pounds, has one year of eligibility remaining. Miami finished 7-7, losing to Fresno State in the Arizona Bowl, the program’s fifth consecutive bowl appearance.
Trick signed with Miami out of Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne. He redshirted in 2022 and was in on six tackles in 13 games in 2023. He began to emerge in 2024 with 37 tackles, 4 1/2 sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.
What Miami (Ohio) transfer edge defender Adam Trick brings to Texas Tech football
Texas Tech’s group of edge defenders was one of the most destructive and productive units in college football this season, but David Bailey and Romello Height, who accounted for 24 sacks between them, are out of eligibility. The position’s further depleted by the graduation exits of their top backups and four young edge defenders exploring the transfer portal themselves.
Tech might have the successors to Bailey and Height in San Diego State’s Trey White, who pledged to the Red Raiders on Monday, Jan. 5, and Trick, who appears ready for the step up in competition.
Pro Football Focus graded Trick eighth highest among all edge defenders in college football this season. Among the players graded higher were Bailey, Height, Utah’s John Henry Daley and likely high NFL draft picks Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor from Miami (Fla.). That’s some fast company.
