Texas Tech football head coach Joey McGuire is trying to figure out his quarterback situation following the Brendan Sorsby fiasco, but ironing out the details versus No. 22 Houston is not ideal. UCF, Boston College and Florida State transfer Thomas Castellanos threw an interception on the Red Raiders’ first offensive snap of the game, and it was a doozy.
The mobile signal-caller did his best to stall with his legs, but he could not hold off the Cougars’ defensive pressure any longer and attempted to throw the ball out of bounds. Unfortunately, accuracy has always been an issue for him. Castellanos’ pass stayed in the field of play, just long enough for Will James to snatch it, as conveyed by the @wokdior X account. Yikes.

Castellanos owns a 58.5 completion percentage for his college career, so there was always a risk that something like this would happen. McGuire obviously values his rushing ability, though, and was willing to take the chance. The early interception likely caused him to reconsider his game plan. Will Hammond has attempted every Texas Tech pass since the turnover, which led to a Houston touchdown and 10-0 deficit.
Following a landmark season, the Red Raiders have been forced to adapt more than they would probably prefer through the first few weeks of the 2026 campaign. They are still 2-0 and favored to defeat their Big 12 opponent on Friday night. Playoff-caliber teams throw on their galoshes, open their umbrellas and weather the storm.
It appears that Texas Texas Tech football is still trudging through the mud right now, doing its best to avoid a torrential downpour. Thomas Castellanos knocked the squad down for a bit, but the Raiders have picked themselves up and currently hold a 21-20 lead at time of print.
