Texas Tech football takes UH LB Corey Platt Jr. from transfer portal

Corey Platt Jr.’s first game under Shiel Wood was something to behold. The young linebacker racked up 15 tackles, including a sack as Tulane whacked South Alabama in a 2023 season opener.

Unfortunately, that was a last hurrah of sorts for Platt, who missed the rest of the 2023 season and the 2024 campaign with Achilles tendon injuries.

But in 2026, he’s signing up to play for Wood again. Platt, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker, told On3 Sports he committed to the Texas Tech football team on Monday, Jan. 12, out of the NCAA transfer portal. Florida had also recruited him in the portal.

Platt’s been at the University of Houston the past two years, missing the 2024 season when he suffered a post-spring Achilles injury, but making an encouraging comeback this season. He was credited with 40 tackles, including 5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. He also broke up two passes and caused a fumble.

Wood, now the Texas Tech defensive coordinator, had the same job at Tulane during Platt’s smashing performance in the 2023 season opener. Both went to Houston before the 2024 season.

Platt prepped at Little Rock (Ark.) Christian Academy. The 2026 season will be his sixth in college football, but after redshirting in 2021 and the two seasons lost to injury, he was listed as a sophomore this season.

On paper, Texas Tech appears set at linebacker with second-team all-Big 12 honoree Austin Romaine from Kansas State joining returning starters Ben Roberts and John Curry. Roberts was credited with 90 tackles this season to go along with 4 interceptions, 5 pass breakups and 2 forced fumbles. Curry was Tech’s fourth-leading tackler with 72 stops. Romaine was K-State’s second-leading tackler with 66.

Platt could provide experienced depth, though, and perhaps some package versatility. He appeared to regain some of his pre-injury form this season, finishing as the ninth-leading tackler on a 10-3 Houston team that beat LSU in the Texas Bowl.
