The Texas Tech football program has already had a wild 2026 season, even though a single down hasn’t been played. Texas Tech went through plenty of drama this spring trying to get quarterback Brendan Sorsby eligible to play. After Sorsby decided to instead try for the NFL, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire is giving an update on the quarterback.
McGuire says that Sorsby will continue efforts to prepare for the NFL, as the year goes on.
“Just chatted with Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire, who tells NBC Sports that Brendan Sorsby will spend a majority of his time training for the NFL Draft in Dallas with his family but will come back to Tech to visit his girlfriend (and) the football program whenever he wants,” NBC college football reporter Nicole Auerbach posted to X, formerly Twitter.

Sorsby planned to enter the NFL’s supplemental draft, but that didn’t work out. He instead will have to wait a full season and enter the 2027 draft. Sorsby was at the center of a gambling investigation in college football, and admitted to placing bets on his team’s games.
Texas Tech football had hoped Sorsby would lead the Red Raiders in 2026. The squad is instead having to look for another starting quarterback. McGuire admitted it has been a tough experience for his program.
“Texas Tech (head coach) Joey McGuire told me that the backlash to the Brendan Sorsby ruling was “really tough” to experience, particularly the pointed comments made by ADs across the country. Said a lot of coaches reached out to check in on him,” Auerbach reported in a separate post.
The Red Raiders are one of the most successful football teams in the Big 12 right now. Texas Tech made the College Football Playoff under McGuire in 2025.
Texas Tech opens the 2026 football season against Abilene Christian, on September 5.
