Texas Tech Keeps Tradition Alive After Stadium Name Change

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech's football stadium has borne the Jones name since it was opened nearly 80 years ago, in honor of the University's former president, Clifford B. Jones and his family, until earlier this summer.
After a contract expiration, Jones AT&T Stadium was renamed to Galaxy Stadium after a $75 million deal was struck with the data center infrastructure company.
Texas Tech, however, announced plans to keep the history of "The Jones" alive and well in West Texas.

Inside the stadium, the often-rowdy student section will now be referred to as "The Jones Student Section at Galaxy Stadium."
"For all President Jones and his wife Audrey accomplished during Texas Tech's early years, we found it only fitting to recognize the impact he made on generations of Red Raiders by naming our student section in their honor," athletic director Kirby Hocutt said.
"The legacy the Jones family left on Texas Tech will never be forgotten, and we'd encourage our students to pack 'The Jones' every game this year as we continue to make Galaxy Stadium one of the best game day environments in the country."
Jones made a significant gift to the university in its formative years, allowing for the birth of the football program among other campus advancements. In 1939, 17 years into the school's existence, Jones was named the university's third president. He held the office until 1944 and was presented the nickname "West Texas' No. 1 Citizen" for his efforts to pursue higher education opportunities in the region.
Students Have New Way to Experience Texas Tech Games
This week, Texas Tech also announced an innovative way for students to experience Lubbock's game day atmosphere, especially in the newly-named student section, more efficiently than ever before.
The school unveiled a program called Red Raider Loyalty, which tracks students' attendance at all athletic events in the school's app, earning them points and greater chances of reserving exclusive tickets earlier than their peers.
The promotion gives students the chance to skip the long game day lines outside the stadium by quickly redeeming tickets to the most sought-after sports, such as football and men's basketball, after racking up points at games across the athletic calendar.
"We're excited to debut the Red Raider Loyalty program with our student body this fall," said Grayson King the incoming Student Body President at Texas Tech and former Red Raiders football walk-on.
"Through this program, game days at Galaxy Stadium and United Supermarkets Arena will be even better, allowing students the ease in knowing they have a guaranteed spot to support our Red Raiders."

Football Color Schemes Announced
When you make it to Galaxy Stadium – whether sitting in The Jones or not – be sure to adhere to the color schemes released by the school for this year's slate of home games.
Saturday, Sep. 5 vs. Abilene Christian – "Wear Red"
Friday, Sep. 18 vs. Houston – "Black Out"
