Texas Tech Might Have the Biggest Joke of a Schedule in College Football

Texas Tech is supposed to be one of the legitimate College Football Playoff contenders in 2026.
Looking at its schedule, it better be.
The Red Raiders have what ESPN recently labeled the easiest overall Power Four schedule in college football, and looking through the opponents, it’s difficult to disagree.
Texas Tech opens against Abilene Christian before traveling to Oregon State. Then comes Houston and Sam Houston to finish September.
That’s the first month.
Where exactly is the test?
Things don’t suddenly become terrifying once Big 12 play gets rolling, either. Texas Tech gets Colorado on the road before a bye, followed by Arizona State at home, Cincinnati on the road, Arizona and West Virginia at home, Oklahoma State and Baylor on the road and TCU at home to finish the regular season.
Seriously?
The Red Raiders don’t have to play a single SEC or Big Ten opponent. There isn’t a powerhouse nonconference matchup waiting for them. Their biggest early road test is Oregon State, and their schedule doesn’t feature the type of heavyweight matchup that could define the season for many other CFP contenders.
Even better for Texas Tech, several of its potentially more difficult Big 12 games come in Lubbock. Arizona State and TCU both have to travel to Texas Tech.
That’s an incredible setup for a program with serious expectations.
And this isn’t some rebuilding Texas Tech team just hoping to sneak into a bowl game. The Red Raiders have invested heavily into building a roster capable of competing for the Big 12 and reaching the College Football Playoff.
With that comes expectations.
There really isn’t much of an excuse for Texas Tech to finish this regular season with three or four losses. If the Red Raiders are as good as advertised, 10-2 should almost feel like the floor. An 11-1 season is completely realistic, and going undefeated shouldn’t be dismissed either.
Of course, college football rarely works exactly how it looks in August. Road games at Colorado, Cincinnati, Oklahoma State and Baylor could become dangerous, and somebody in the Big 12 will inevitably emerge as a bigger threat than expected.
But compare this road to what some other national contenders will face.
It’s night and day.
Texas Tech has been handed one of the cleanest paths imaginable to the College Football Playoff.
Now they actually have to take advantage of it.
Because if the Red Raiders somehow miss the playoff with this schedule, they’re going to have a lot of explaining to do.
