Texas Tech’s Austin Romaine makes lightning strike twice against Sam Houston

Week 4 of the college football season is underway, and several matchups are drawing plenty of attention from fans. However, the Texas Tech Red Raiders’ matchup against the Sam Houston Bearkats has produced an unusual sequence worth noting.
It’s not uncommon for a quarterback to throw a pick-six. It might not even be surprising to see a quarterback throw two in the same game. Sometimes, a quarterback can even throw back-to-back pick-sixes during a rough day at the office.
But have you ever seen two quarterbacks throw back-to-back pick-sixes to the same defender?

In this case, Sam Houston quarterbacks Landyn Locke and Brett Holloway fell victim to Texas Tech linebacker Austin Romaine on consecutive drives.
That just happened.

The first interception came off a tip at the line of scrimmage, with Romaine taking it 15 yards to the house. One play later, Romaine stepped in front of a Sam Houston receiver and raced 31 yards to the end zone for another score.
Texas Tech Controlling Sam Houston Thanks to Romaine
Texas Tech took a 21-0 lead following Romaine’s second consecutive pick-six. Sam Houston cut the deficit to seven by halftime, but the Red Raiders extended their advantage in a big way during the second half.
Texas Tech entered Week 4 on a roll and is showing why many viewed the program as a Big 12 favorite heading into the 2026 season. The Red Raiders opened the year 3-0, including a thrilling victory over Houston.

If Texas Tech can keep this momentum rolling, the Red Raiders could continue to improve as the season progresses. However, the quarterback position remains a major concern. Current starter Will Hammond has struggled through the first four weeks, including multiple turnovers against Sam Houston.
As for Romaine, the senior transfer from Kansas State entered Week 4 with just one career interception. He has now doubled that total in spectacular fashion, giving him two pick-sixes and a couple of souvenirs to take home.
