Texas WR Kaliq Lockett Out for Spring After Surgery, Impact on Team's Season

Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns did not meet expectations during the 2025 college football season. After opening the year ranked No. 1 in the AP preseason poll for the first time in program history, Texas fell short of a College Football Playoff berth.

The Longhorns navigated a challenging schedule last season, facing five AP top-10 opponents and posting a 3-2 record in those games. Their losses came against the Ohio State Buckeyes and Georgia Bulldogs, while they secured wins over the Oklahoma Sooners, Vanderbilt Commodores and in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies. Under head coach Steve Sarkisian, Texas finished 10-3 overall, including a 6-2 mark in SEC play.

Texas is looking to regain its footing in college football and make the College Football Playoffs. Highly touted quarterback Arch Manning will lead Texas this season, and surrounding him with talented pass catchers is of utmost concern.

Kaliq Lockett is a 6-foot-2 receiver for the Longhorns. He came in as a five-star prospect, No. 18 overall and ranked as the No. 2 wide receiver in the recruiting class (247Sports Composite). As a true freshman, Lockett was able to see some action. He appeared in three games against the San Jose Spartans, the Sam Houston State Bearkats and in the Citrus Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines. His best game was against Michigan, where the talented young receiver caught two catches for 35 yards to go along with a touchdown.

On Tuesday, Evan Vieth of Inside Texas reported that the tantalizing receiver underwent surgery and will likely be out for the rest of the spring.

“Breaking: #Texas WR Kaliq Lockett underwent surgery last week and will likely be out for the rest of spring practice, Vieth posted on X. “Lockett scored a 4th quarter touchdown in the Citrus Bowl in Texas’ win against Michigan”

Texas will open its season against the Texas State Bobcats on Sep. 5th.
