Saturday’s meeting between the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs and No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide could be in the path of a tropical system, throwing preparations for the 7:30 p.m. ET kick-off at Bryant-Denny Stadium into disarray.
Alabama Athletics said in a statement on X on Tuesday night that it has no plans, for now, to change the game, but the uncertainty over the situation has left fans demanding clarity.
Alabama’s Weather Statement Leaves Questions on Georgia Game Unanswered
An Alabama Athletics post headed “Information on Saturday’s Alabama football game vs. Georgia” did little to calm the storm brewing amongst fans. “Alabama Athletics is closely monitoring the weather forecast ahead of Saturday’s football game vs. Georgia,” the statement read. “At this time, there are no plans to alter the contest.”
The school added that it will keep watching conditions through the week and stay in communication with the SEC office. A league spokesperson told CBS Sports earlier Tuesday that the conference was keeping an eye on forecasts, as it does every week, and staying in touch with schools whose games could be affected.

James Spann, who advises Alabama officials on game days and gives forecasts to coaches, said he has no direct role in the decision, but told AL.com on Tuesday that there was not enough confidence in the forecast to make any decision yet.
Among those replying to or quoting the Alabama Athletics post, one fan shared the statement and wrote “Thanks for nothing” above it.
“Is the purpose of this message simply to address the fake SEC announcements going around, without mentioning the fake announcements?” Jordan Liles, a senior reporter at Snopes, asked in a reply, referencing a false social media post that appeared to be an official announcement from the Southeastern Conference.
Another fan wanted to know what a change would even look like. “Is there any insight into which avenue, between relocation/moving it up or back a day they’d favor?”
Fans Divided Over Whether to Play or Move Alabama vs. Georgia
Spann told AL.com that moving the game remains an option. “I’m saying it’s clearly on the table. It would be a nightmare for everybody involved.”
He said a Category 1 or 2 hurricane coming up Mobile Bay on Saturday morning would bring a chance of wind gusts to 50 mph, torrential rain, and isolated tornadoes in Tuscaloosa.
Add in the planned visit from President Donald Trump and the Secret Service security perimeters and equipment, and the logistics get even more complicated with the potential for extreme weather, Spann said. The presence of the president led Andy Mac to joke about Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer calling in a favor to the White House.
Complication turned to controversy as fans appeared split by the best course of action. “Don’t let Sankey talk y’all into moving this game,” one fan replied, referring to SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey.
“Gotta be moved or played Sunday,” another fan replied, seeing no way around a change.
The call would not be Alabama’s alone. According to CBS Sports, the SEC and the two schools could decide to move the game, though it described that as a very rare measure used only in extreme circumstances.
There is precedent for a Sunday kickoff. In 2016, Hurricane Matthew pushed Georgia’s game at South Carolina from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon.

The last time the SEC moved a football game was in September 2022, according to CBS Sports, when Florida pushed its game back to Sunday and South Carolina moved its game up to Thursday ahead of Hurricane Ian.
Spann said the National Hurricane Center was set to begin advisories Tuesday afternoon and that the information needed to make a decision should be in hand by Wednesday.
