The 5 Things About College Football from Week 10

Texas Keeps Surviving

It seemed safe to write off the ‘Horns after two early losses and an offense that couldn’t get off the ground. However, Texas kept finding ways to win while the offense has started to wake up. October saw them pull off a big upset of rival Oklahoma, survive overtime scares from Kentucky and Mississippi State, and then get off to a fast start to take down #9 Vanderbilt on Saturday. Texas could still lose another game against #5 Georgia or #3 Texas A&M in the coming weeks and make the playoffs, considering one of their losses was on the road at #1 Ohio State all the way back in week one.

Miami Fooled Us Again

I’ll admit, I fell for the early-season Hurricane Hype. Miami sure looked the part of a legit title contender with major improvements along the offensive and defensive lines. However, Miami has lost two of three to fall out of the ACC race and likely the playoff picture as well. Miami suffered its second loss to SMU due to crucial mistakes down the stretch, including a roughing the quarterback penalty that set up an SMU field goal to send the game into overtime, as well as a crushing interception by Carson Beck in OT. The ‘Canes will need help the rest of the way, as they are two games behind Virginia and a game behind five others with just one ACC loss thus far.

A Wild November for the ACC

Speaking of which, we are in for a wild finish in the ACC. Virginia is somehow alone at the top thanks to a 5-0 conference record. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech, Pitt, Louisville, SMU and Duke are all hoping for a trip to the conference championship game with one-loss apiece. There will be plenty of high-stakes match-ups the rest of the way as they jockey for position, with the two finalists likely being determined by multiple tiebreakers.

Georgia isn’t the Same, but They’re Still a Contender

The ‘Dawgs early success under Kirby Smart came from #1 recruiting classes with loads of future draft picks that overwhelmed opponents. Thanks to NIL and the portal ushering a new era, Georgia just has not been able to build the dominant rosters they enjoyed until recently. Despite not being able to outclass opponents, Georgia keeps on finding ways to win. They proved again on Saturday to be the most clutch team of the season with a comeback victory over Florida. It seems like they are at their best whenever their backs are against the wall, but anytime they really need to make a play, someone steps up and gets the job done. They should go into the playoffs with a world of confidence, even if they no longer have the more talented roster.

More Husker Woes

Poor, poor Nebraska. After years of losing close game after close game, it seemed like things were looking up for the ‘Huskers. They had #23 USC on the ropes Saturday night before disaster struck yet again. Dylan Raiola exited the game with a leg injury, and it was obvious the ’Huskers offense was done for the night. USC was eventually able to pull ahead for a 21-17 victory, handing Nebraska their third loss of the season as they search for answers without Raiola in the lineup for the time being.
